We have entered Scorpio season, ushering in an energy that is mysterious, dark and penetrating. It is a time when the veil between the physical and spiritual world is thinnest, inviting us to connect with the unseen realm, our shadow and our ancestral lineage. As we descend into the stillness of winter, Scorpio supports us in embracing the cycles of life, death and rebirth. Within the darkness of endings lies peace, power and the energy of pure potential.
My brother was a Scorpio-his birthday would have been on October 28th. Since he passed two years ago, Scorpio season has taken on a new meaning for me. It has become a sacred time of remembrance, a period when I feel a calling to honor and connect with both my brother and my ancestors on a deeper level. If you have a loved one who has passed over or are seeking support and intuitive guidance from your ancestral lineage, this is a potent time to welcome in the energy of Spirit. Here are three rituals to help you connect with the other realm over Scorpio season:
1) Create an altar for your ancestors
An ancestral altar is a sacred space dedicated to honoring and connecting with family members who have passed over. On your altar, you can place items that represent these relatives. Some examples include photos, a white candle with a loved one’s name carved in it, their favorite snack or anything else that evokes their energy. You may also want to include crystals such as black tourmaline for protection and selenite for spiritual connection, along with objects connected to the elements such as plants, incense or water.
When you have created your altar, take some time each day to connect with the energy of your passed over loved one, offering them gratitude. If you wish to communicate with your ancestors, always set the intention to only welcome in ancestral energy aligned to love. A simple way to invite in the presence of Spirit is by imagining a bridge that connects you to the other realm. Once you have created a sacred space, you can then ask for any guidance to help you with your soul’s purpose and lessons. Pay special attention to synchronicities in your external environment. Spirit will often deliver messages in subtle ways: it could be through a song, a totem animal (ex. a bird that suddenly starts making regular appearances in your yard), repeating number sequences (ex. 11:11), through feelings, sensations or even by causing the lights to flicker in your house.
2) Engage in dreamwork
One of the easiest ways for past over loved ones and ancestors to connect with us is through our dreams, when our conscious mind is at rest and we are more open to receiving messages. To engage in dreamwork, turn off tech an hour before you go to sleep and create an environment of calm in your room. Lighting a candle and burning some incense are great tools to help you naturally tune into your intuition and welcome in Spirit. Before you go to sleep, set the intention to connect with your loved ones through your dreams and to remember any messages upon waking. Sleeping with rose quartz, amethyst or howlite underneath your pillow can help to facilitate dreamwork, along with loose mugwort. Keep a journal by your bed and immediately upon awakening, write down anything that you remember. This could be symbols, feelings, images or words that suddenly pop into your mind. Messages will not always come through in a linear way, yet the insights that you record may make sense over time.
3) Write a letter to your ancestors
Writing is a powerful way to connect with your unconscious and activate your intuition. Writing a letter to your passed over loved ones or ancestors can help when you are seeking guidance or need to release any unresolved emotions. Allow yourself to express in this letter anything that is on your heart; you can also give gratitude for their wisdom and support. Place the letter underneath a white candle on your altar and spend some time in meditation, opening yourself up to receive any insight or messages coming through. Close the ritual by thanking the spirits who have come in for their presence and guidance.
Sacred rituals provide a powerful way to connect with the unseen during Scorpio season and to honor the cycles of death and rebirth. What practices have you felt called to explore recently to deepen your own connection with the spirit realm?
