The energy may feel restless and busy as we move towards an expressive New Moon in Gemini on June 6th. This moon will have five planets in Gemini, focusing our energy on communication, ideas and the mental narrative. The Moon will be conjunct Venus, highlighting a newfound awareness and change around the way that we express and speak our truth.
In Western Astrology, Gemini rules early education. Our experiences in school deeply influence how we learn to communicate and express our needs. Trauma from childhood that becomes stored in the unconscious is often related to our external environment. When as a child we are shut down or discouraged from sharing our thoughts, we adapt limiting beliefs around self-expression that we must work through and heal through our adult years.
As someone with her Eighth house (the source of subconscious motivations, trauma and hidden power) ruled by Gemini, a large part of my healing journey has centered around healing wounds related to speaking my truth, in particular those connected to early experiences in school. I learned through my educational environment that the way to fit in and remain safe was either by having the “right” answer or through silence. Teachers appreciated my love of learning, yet each one also labeled me as “shy” or “reserved”. I can tell you in hindsight that this was not my innate nature. I’m a Libra and an air sign-we are known for being chatty. Yet I learned to repress my voice from an early age both out of fear of making a mistake and as a way to find safety within my environment. As a result, I struggled throughout my life well into my adult years with people pleasing, asserting my needs and finding my voice.
Early childhood experiences create the foundation for unconscious trauma in many ways. The educational system that influenced me was not one which honored authenticity and the development of your individual and unique gifts, but rather a prescriptive system that required students to conform. We had to speak a certain way, study what was deemed “useful” and receive arbitrary examinations and numbers (ie grades) that supposedly measured our success, our failure and served as markers for determining our future professional path. Part of my own healing journey involved spending 14 years as a Middle and High School language teacher, where I sought to help students who mirrored my own challenges reclaim their unique voice. I worked with many young adults who suffered from major anxiety, stress and trauma as they constantly struggled to achieve certain “results” and conform to the expectations of a deeply flawed school system as well as to those of their families.
Over the coming year with Jupiter now in Gemini and Pluto in Aquarius, the systems and external constructs created by society will be called into question. We are invited to contemplate how education has influenced or inhibited our self-expression, where we have sacrificed our authenticity in order to make others happy and how we now are being called to honor and express our unique voices.
I invite you to reflect during this New Moon upon the theme of communication.
What lessons are coming to the surface around how you speak your truth?
How has your external environment inhibited you from sharing your unique voice?
How are you now ready to communicate from a space of truth and empowerment?
